Vivitrol Information

Vivatrol is the first and only injectable version of Naltrexone, a powerful weapon used in the treatment of alcohol dependence.  It is intended for use with people who are able to abstain from drinking and an outpatient or intensive outpatient setting.  It is also indicated for use in combination with psychosocial support, such as individual counseling or group therapy.

• Vivatrol is a long-acting formulation of a currently approved drug, Naltrexone
• Vivatrol is designed for once-monthly dosing of Naltrexone and is designed to provide a new treatment option for patients with alcohol dependence
• Naltrexone is a non-addictive, non-aversive agent that binds to opioid receptors in the brain.  In people with alcohol dependence, is believed that this blockage diminishes craving for alcohol and leads to a greater ability to resist urges to excessively drink.
• Vivatrol was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is now available for general patient use.
